Place nodes in the air.
My Air Wand is a wand that lets you place blocks in the air. Instead of building towers of dirt or whatever you use to place a starter block up high you can just fly up and place a block where you want. Hold the wand and click. It places whatever block you have to the right of the wand in inventory.
This is great to start a city in the sky or your own sky island.

Useful and clever
This is a great, tiny mod that conforms to the UNIX concept of, "Do one thing and do it well." You can now start a cloud fortress without the starting column of sand. I suppose it's the most useful in creative mode, or at least when flying.
Bye bye scaffolding?!
