How do I install this?

With the command /snap a player can take in-game photos.

Photos can be placed on the sides of nodes using right click.

Do you recommend this mod?

  • Very cool idea, bad in practice

I really like the idea of a camera mod. Create an image of what you see and put it on a wall later. This could be used for various creative things. The picture taking itself works fine but is oddly done with a command rather than an item or something.

Sadly, due to the limitations of Minetest, there are several drawbacks and limitations:

    • Only b/w images
    • Objects and players are invisible to the camera
    • Custom block shapes are not supported. In the photo it either becomes a full block or no block. E.g. plants are not drawn correctly
    • Picture calculation is slow, it can take several seconds
    • Making a picture blocks the entire server. So while the picture is calculated, everything else comes to a screeching halt

While the first 3 limitations may be acceptable, the performance problem is the biggest show stopper right now.

This mod clearly tries to put Minetest to its limits and it's definitely worth checking out because it's something very unique. But I don't recommend this mod for actual gameplay or server use. Consider this mod experimental.

  • Nice! But has limited use sadly

Really nice, finally a camera in game! :D But sadly minetest is a bit limited, so we dont get to have colors other than black and white and the photo wont look like what we see. Atleast we can take better screenshots with the f12 button! But i really like the idea for this mod and maybe in the future it will be able to have color and better nodes ;)

But if you wanna take a picture of landscapes like mountains, trees and stuff like that, not of your house or something more complex, it looks very good and we can understand and see that "oh, that's a tree. thats a mountain". It was very laggy for me too, but 15 seconds isnt that bad , and when it can takes photos, WHO CARES ABOUT LAG lol! Recommend for landscape pictures only.

    And again...very good idea lol

  • Cool

Sure, maybe it's not practical to use in-game, but it's so impressive that I don't care. I litteraly have no idea how you did this.

  • almost

It absolutely would be usable in-game, and would fit the esthetic and everytng, if very light-weight nodes such as grass did not become full blocks in photos. Then it can be black-and-white.
