Add natural slopes for Minetest Game

How do I install this?

Smoothen the edges by adding natural slopes at generation time and when the landscape changes for Minetest Game. Most of the default ground nodes can have their "stair" shape which is set automatically when they are put on edges.

Those slopes are not craftable, they just happen by themselves at generation time and when the landscape changes. You can also use your digging tools to soften the edges with their secondary use. This will wear the tool a little on success, and works better with higher-grade tools.

This mod is an usage of naturalslopeslib for Minetest Game. Please check the library page for the forum topic and details about its settings and optional dependencies.

Settings tip: if the map generation is too long, check the naturalslopeslib settings and set Generation method to Progressive.

  • Natural slopes adds some interest

I just did a quick peruse with the minetest default game. I was expecting it to modify sand and dirt which naturally might make slopes but was pleasantly surprised to see that stone was also affected. This mod uses the stair shapes in a unique way in various orientations to create the slopes and I think it makes the environment more interesting to look at, as contours are even more randomized.

    Thank you for your efforts!

  • additional .obj s ...

3 or 4 days ago i found out about you natural slopes mod - and thought this is what i always wanted - being a bit tired from the totally squared look - nice idea and great work @ karamel! but soon ended a bit disappointed, cause the mathematical strait slopes an the stairs both seemed not that natural to me. (and that the mod's support only vanilla (and a bit +) and Hades rev. Minetest.) But i wondered about a solution, if a simple modifying of your strait objects with some more vertices, and different normals could lead to an improved overall impression, even if with part optical illusion. At first i tried several 3d-, node- and mesh-editors all with different kind of struggle to import, subdivide and export in functional .obj s and got a bit disappointed again by this waste of time! So i dived into the specs of alias wavefront .obj and used some plane sheet of paper and a text editor instead (i was faster to the point as with the best working of those editors mentioned). And now here it is: A set of new object free for everyone to copy to ..\mods\naturalslopeslib\models and of cause for you to make it public availble as additional sub set/ setting perhaps call it "Dan's" "bumpy" or "approx" smooth...

maybe i find a way to add some screenshots, or to post the created .obj s

  • Really beautiful terrain

This mod makes terrain much more beautiful, but sadly when it converts leaves to stairs/slabs, they stop decaying.

  • Makes the world more realistic

I first tested this mod in the cubic shapes and it looked really nice although it was a bit annoying to build a roof for my house :] But I still managed to build the roof. Then I tested it with rough and liked how it looked more realistic. Finally I tested smooth and oh my gosh it looks nice!!! However loading the game and logging out of the game takes ages and loading map chunks is a bit annoying. So if you want slopes and if you're fine with map chunks taking 10 seconds to load and logging in or out taking a while then this is the mod for you. I reccomand it :)

  • Looks good but slows down map generation enormously with default settings

This mod created server lag with default naturalslopeslib settings, on an 8-core machine. IMO these should be adjusted accordingly.

If interacting with the world in singleplayer mode becomes extremely laggy with this mod active, change the naturalslopeslib settings:

Changing “Generation Method” to “Progressive” lead to a non-laggy game. You can also disable “Shape update on generation” to fix this.
