Minetest Classic 🔗

This game is a recreation of the classic Minetest-c55 0.3 gameplay, including:

  • Original textures
  • All four mobs¹
  • Identical items, crafting recipes, dig times; closely matched ore distribution

Unlike the original it has (optional) support for:

  • Sounds
  • PvP
  • Localization
  • Engine features such as the modern skybox, waving or shadows
  • Modern creative inventory and per-player creative mode

To control some of the modern features check out "Modernize flags" in the settings menu. For an experience faithful to 0.3 you should disable Fancy leaves and 3D Clouds on your client.

¹: Fireflies do not spawn naturally and are only available in creative mode.

    Nostalgic

The main menu has the old textures as expected, from the get go the tone was set, created a new world, and as spawned in a desert, the sand was ocher, walked a bit and found a forest, filled with apples, walked a bit more and found a thick jungle, a cave followed soon after, and then the deep orange color of iron ore, crafted some torches, I feel like I remember them being animated. At least the ceiling lantern is still there. Didn't stumble into a lot of rats or fireflies in the wild sadly.

The sneak glitch is there, but of course not the real one, no sneak elevators that launch you to the sky, no fast climbing or cheating death when falling on a ledge.

Darkness is way darker in this engine version, so the caves don't feel exactly right.

Feels very nostalgic, while of course stuff like lighting, mobs, etc, aren't exactly the same since the engine has changed, it's still got the whole aesthetic of classic Minetest down.

Would be cool to see some classic mods added or posted to the CDB as separate packages, it feels good playing old Minetest, while I don't think it's really possible to emulate the exact feeling of 0.3 in 0.5, there's still some improvement that could be made to get a more authentic feeling.

    Very fun, albeit quite lonely

Disclaimer: I haven't played Minetest during its 03~0.4 development cycle, so I went into this game practically "blind", without knowing what to expect.

It is quite fun, and definitely has its own charm. You can go mining, smelt ores, eat rats (yikes!), and fight weird but interesting mobs. I had no idea about the "Guardian" before playing and it startled me like crazy when I first went mining, lol.

I believe all the textures and sprites are the original, made by celeron55 himself. They have a cool, grainy charm to them. The player sprite (which also appears to be the default in Luanti if there is no model set) makes me think either of a mysterious alien, or some sort of hooded man/wizard.

One little note is that it seems some crafting recipes are missing or some blocks just have no other purpose, like is the case for jungle wood.

Overall, I think this would be great for someone looking for a really simple survival game that also has an oddly eerie atmosphere. I must also say that I really like the terrain generation in this game.

I Like it, simple and fun

Ive built a bit in this game and theres definitely not much to do but build, and thats pretty much all you do, its not boring but gets stale quickly unless your a highly creative individual who knows what they are doing.

    Great

I forgot how dangerous dungeon masters were and how often they destroyed my bases
