If you leave the marker posts in place as visual indicators things get messy. When you try to mark a second area with more markers it always thinks you're marking from the earlier markers not the last you placed. Likely a bug which I guess I ought to submit. Of course you can use the marker blocks at each corner instead. Not only are they prettier but are also functional.
