do we need to place the leaves or they automatically generate?
No currently not.
Hi Arkatron, Currently colored leaves do not spawn naturally. They can however be crafted from naturally spawning materials.
You can craft them from an apple tree leaf and some dye.
I am planing to update the crafting recipes and perhaps make them spawn naturally too.
I know the crafting recipie and now know that will generat in future. Btw I made some real lookin cherry trees with your mod.
