On certain drawtypes, especially mesh, paramtype="light" is de facto "required". Otherwise, the node will be fully in darkness, which smooth lighting partially hides, but only in trivial circumstances. Try turning off smooth lighting or making a huge heap of the plushie models and see that the fully-enclosed ones are completely black. It's a good idea to do some testing with smooth lighting disabled to unmask these problems before release.
