I think it's up to everyone to decide if the game is balanced or not. Many others stated it's a fun twist on chess as it is now. It's sad to hear that the balancing isn't quite the style you were expecting. Maybe in a future version we can add a setting to determine the strength of the randomness. The bugs you encountered were difficult to surround due to the time constraints. This can also be worked on in future versions. The timeframe to implement many of the chess logic as well as the bot was really tight. Therefore it was quite hard to even submit a game and not just a raw prototype. I hope you can understand this.
Hopefully you at least enjoyed the normal chess mode. (Even if this one doesn't really fit the theme)
Since we wanted the game to be playable on lower end PCs we had to find a good ratio between acceptable moves and speed. You can configure the bot strength yourself though. Therefore you can find detailed instructions in the README. At date you have to configure the bot in the source code but we are looking forward to add a seperate setting for that.
There is also a way to play normal chess. Just try /start_normal ;)
There where some other quite interesting twists on chess we wanted to implement, but unfortunately there wasn't enough time to add them.
Maybe in a future version ;)
Thank you very very much for your kind feedback! I hope you enjoyed your time playing the game.
As for the bot, it was quite a challenge to find a good balance between "thinking time" and good moves. That's why we kept it simple. However, it is possible to make the engine look even further in the game by compromising on speed. Perhaps this is something that could be added as a separate setting in the future.
Also, checking winning positions is something that takes some time to calculate. At least in our implementation. So it is possible to make the bot more powerful, but we wanted to give everyone the best experience, even if they use a less powerful PC to play.
The time frame for the jam was so tight that it was even difficult to implement a real game and not just a prototype. Therefore, it was not possible to implement a timer for the multiplayer mode as well as better highlighting for the unexpected behavior in addition to all the logic. But maybe we can implement them in the next version :)
Since the Moonlight Sonata is a piece that is out of copyright, it's easy to find the MIDI files of it. Just paste them into a DAW and you're good to go. ^^
Therefore we mixed it, but I hope it's not a big problem that we didn't play it ourselves. We had so many other things to do to finish in time.
Thank you very much for playing our game! The problem you encountered is definitely not intentional. We hope to fix it in one of the next versions.
Thank very much for playing the game! Glad you enjoyed it. ^^
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it. We hope we can fix the texture error in the next version.
..
Thank you for your productive feedback!

Highlight the last move is a really good idea. Maybe in the next version :)

The texture error is something related to minetest we couldn't quite figure out. But I hope we can fix it after the jam is over. ^^
