Disclaimer: I haven't played Minetest during its 03~0.4 development cycle, so I went into this game practically "blind", without knowing what to expect.
It is quite fun, and definitely has its own charm. You can go mining, smelt ores, eat rats (yikes!), and fight weird but interesting mobs.
I had no idea about the "Guardian" before playing and it startled me like crazy when I first went mining, lol.
I believe all the textures and sprites are the original, made by celeron55 himself. They have a cool, grainy charm to them. The player sprite (which also appears to be the default in Luanti if there is no model set) makes me think either of a mysterious alien, or some sort of hooded man/wizard.
One little note is that it seems some crafting recipes are missing or some blocks just have no other purpose, like is the case for jungle wood.
Overall, I think this would be great for someone looking for a really simple survival game that also has an oddly eerie atmosphere.
I must also say that I really like the terrain generation in this game.
